Dare to Dream 2020: Meet Lara, the future Conveyancer

Lara wants to help people with their own dream to buy a home. “I want to be able to say congratulations and see their smile when they purchase their first home so that they can start a family and make happy memories.”

Dural local, Lara Sawaya, is one of just eight young Australians to be awarded the 2020 scholarship, after she was diagnosed with cancer in 2019.

The 17-year-old was diagnosed with Stage 4B metastasised Hodgkin lymphoma when she was 16 years old. She is now off-treatment and undergoes regular check-ups.

“Cancer has affected me in every aspect of my life from schooling to friendships and it has impacted my self-esteem. When I lost my hair and gained weight from the steroids, they didn’t want to be my friends anymore. They treated cancer like the flu, as if they could catch it,” Lara said.

Lara has always wanted to start her own conveyancing firm to help people with their own dream to buy a home.

“I want to be able to support them. I want to be able to say congratulations and see their smile when they purchase their first home so that they can start a family and make happy memories,” Lara said.

Lara’s mum Belinda said the $3,000 Dare to Dream scholarship has given her daughter new-found confidence.

“It has given her the strength to carry on living and to give back to the community and help people, so thank you,” Belinda said.

We can’t wait to see Lara’s conveyancing career take flight!

Funded with the support of Coles, Redkite’s Dare to Dream scholarship can be put towards education, career or life goals that have been disrupted due to the impact cancer has on a child’s physical and mental wellbeing.
