Dare to Dream 2020: Meet Joshua Knox, pianist and future composer

Cancer, nor a 50-year-old piano, are going to stand in the way of Joshua’s dream to become a professional pianist and composer.

Joshua Knox is one of two national winners of the 2020 Redkite and Coles Dare to Dream Scholarship. The 17 year old, from Pymble, dreams of one day becoming a professional pianist and composer.

He was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his left leg in 2015, when he was 12.

Joshua, who started playing the piano when he was four years old, continued to play through two relapses: one in November 2018, when the tumour moved to his right lung, and one in August 2019, when the tumour moved to his spine.

Joshua completed the fifth grade in piano in early 2019 and plans to sit for his A Masters exams in 2022.

“Cancer has, undoubtedly, prevented me from reaching my full potential in music. Due to all my surgeries, my movement has been quite limited, and piano is one of the only remaining things that I enjoy that I can still do. I also really like the sound of the piano,” Joshua said.

Joshua, who is in a clinical trial which is keeping the tumour in his T9 vertebrae under control, said that he plans to buy a second-hand Kawai piano with his scholarship funding.

“The piano that I have now is over half a century old and the sustain pedal (right pedal) doesn’t work anymore. With this second-hand piano, I will be able to fully express myself and play more challenging pieces,” Joshua said.

Congratulations, Joshua, on being a Dare To Dream 2020 national winner!

Funded with the support of Coles, Redkite’s national Dare to Dream scholarship can be put towards education, career or life goals that have been disrupted due to the impact cancer has on a child’s physical and mental wellbeing.
