Dare to Dream 2020: Meet future Nurse & Art Therapist, Miranda
The nurses who Miranda met while on treatment have inspired her to follow in their footsteps.
Gold Coast local Miranda is one of just eight young Australians to be awarded a Coles and Redkite Dare to Dream Scholarship after she was diagnosed with cancer in 2014.
Miranda developed a passion for nursing and art as she was being treated with thyroid cancer at John Hunter Children’s Hospital in Newcastle, New South Wales.
“I got to know the nurses when I was being treated. They were really kind to me and I really admired them. I want to be able to go back and show other sick children that there is still compassion in this world,” Miranda said.
During treatment, Miranda was bullied when she had to wear a large bandage on her neck after surgery for the removal her thyroid and its surrounding tumours.
Under the direction of an art therapist, Miranda used drawing and painting as a coping mechanism for dealing with her illness and mental health.
“I used art to escape from my reality. I was able to express my inner emotions through art. It really helped me and it was a powerful coping mechanism. I really want to be able to continue help other young people struggling with cancer through art,” she said.
Now off-treatment, but still undergoing regular check-ups, Miranda will use her $3,000 scholarship to support her Bachelor of Nursing degree and her Art Therapist Diploma.
“This scholarship will help me immensely in my goals towards becoming a nurse and art therapist.”
Funded with the support of Coles, Redkite’s Dare to Dream scholarship can be put towards education, career or life goals that have been disrupted due to the impact cancer has on a child’s physical and mental wellbeing.
