Redkite Music Box for children and teenagers diagnosed with cancer

Facing childhood cancer is an emotional experience, especially for children and teenagers who are still learning about themselves, their feelings and how to express themselves. It can be hard to cope with the change that can come with a long hospital stay, the emotional effects of treatment and surgeries, and being separated from family and friends.

Using music and movement in a creative way, can help children and teenagers by:

  • Encouraging a positive atmosphere
  • Recognise and understand feelings
  • Support talking openly
  • Help deal with and manage strong feelings

What is the Redkite Music Box program?

Based in the practices of music therapy, Redkite Music Box is a collection of resources for children and teenagers that can help them reflect on, process, and express their feelings through music. It also includes resources for parents and carers to improve their own emotional wellbeing and connect with their child.

Using creativity, movement, self-expression, and listening, children and teenagers will be able to explore how they’re feeling in a positive way that can help them better cope with the challenges that cancer is causing in their lives.

The Redkite Music Box program was developed by Verena Clemencic-Jones, one of Redkite’s pioneering Registered Music Therapists, in consultation with Redkite’s National Social Work and Music Therapy teams.

Some of the activities include:

  • Creative singing and dancing
  • Body percussion
  • How to write a song
  • How to make a drum
  • Ukelele tips and tricks

What will I/my children gain from the program?

Through a series of online modules, you will gain information and access to activities to help you and your children work through some of the big emotions that can come up throughout the cancer experience, such as but not limited to; anxiety, fear, stress, overwhelm and sadness.

The program can help parents and carers to:

Teach children about their emotions and explore them in a creative and fun way.

Encourage children to express themselves through music and movement.

Help children better cope with nausea and pain.

Connect with their children in a positive way during and after their hospital stay.

Teenagers can gain the same benefits from the program through doing the activities on their own or with their parents and carers.

Who is Redkite Music Box for?

The Redkite Music Box program is for:

  • Children and teenagers (aged 0-18) with cancer who are receiving treatment or are post treatment
  • Siblings of children with cancer
  • Parents and carers

Activities for younger children are written for parents and carers to help them take part in these activities.
