Social Work
We are here to help you with the challenges you may be facing
Redkite’s services are based on a social work model of practice – but what does that look like? Let’s break it down.
Every family is different, and every family member’s experience with childhood cancer is different. Our social workers are here to listen and learn about each individual to provide the support they need most.
What is a Social Worker?
A social worker supports people through difficult times in their life. Redkite’s team of social workers are childhood cancer specialists and have been there for countless families and children throughout their cancer experience.
Redkite Social Workers are available to help when you need to talk. Different to the support of friends and family, which is also important, but Redkite talk with families going through cancer treatment every day.
How can a Redkite Social Worker Help?
Redkite’s Social Workers will help you to feel empowered, listened to and understood by providing counselling to the whole family, education, and helping to organise and connect you with the support you need.
They can help you navigate changes in family relationships and provide information and support when talking to children and siblings about cancer.
No matter what your situation is, our social workers can help you manage the challenges you are facing so that you can focus on the care and health of your child.
Our social workers provide:
Unlimited counselling and mental health support for adults and children
Advocacy services including working with other health professionals to help you access all the professional support you need
Support managing financial responsibilities and accessing aid programs and government payments
Information and resources about childhood cancer, including age and role-specific content
Facilitated group support sessions so you can meet and share your experiences with people in a similar situation
Support for special needs or circumstances, including but not limited to split families, neurodivergent children, and financial hardship
Hospital-Based VS Community-Based Social Workers?
Social workers are available for families both in-hospital and outside of the hospital (community-based). This means you won’t lose access to a social worker when you leave the hospital. Our community-based support is available to you and your family while you are at home.
When your child is admitted to hospital, you will have contact with an Oncology Social Worker. They have a lot of experience supporting families through cancer and are great people to talk to if you have a question.
We understand that when you leave the hospital a new set of challenges begin, and you may still want support.
Redkite social workers specialise in paediatric oncology and are the only free, community-based social working service available to families facing childhood cancer.
