Musical Bonds: Helping siblings cope when a child has cancer

Using music can strengthen family bonds during challenging times. Creating personalised playlists and having family music sessions can also be fun!

When a child in your family has cancer, it affects everyone, including brothers and sisters. Music can be a great way to help your family feel closer and more connected. You can create special playlists with songs that each child likes. Having family nights where you sing together, or drum together can also make everyone feel closer.

One suggestion is to have music as part of your daily routine, like listening to upbeat, happy songs in the morning and calming ones before bedtime. If it’s hard to talk about how you feel, music can help. Kids can write their own songs to express their feelings or even help choose songs for a family playlist. It’s also a good idea to let each child have their own time to listen to music by themselves. You can adjust these ideas to fit what works best for your family.

Music can make tough times a bit easier for everyone and can be a real source of support when you have cancer.
