Redkite Music Box: Supporting families through music

Redkite Music Box is here to help you and your family while you’re going through treatment, when you are at home, between hospital visits or after treatment is finished.

What is Music Therapy?

The hospital experience can be overwhelming for children and their families. Bringing music therapy into this environment gives children and families the chance to step into a different world. It creates a safe and calming space, which can help children feel more grounded and mindful, especially in the face of unfamiliar and often confronting medical procedures.

Using music and movement in a creative way can help children and teenagers by:

  • Help deal with and manage strong feelings
  • Encouraging a positive atmosphere
  • Recognise and understand feelings
  • Support talking openly

Redkite has created the Music Box program to help you and your family whenever you are at home, between hospital visits or after treatment is finished. Even when your child is in hospital, you can use this resource along with the fun activities.

The aim of Redkite Music Box is to:

  • Teach children about their emotions and explore them in a creative and fun way
  • Encourage children to express themselves through music and movement
  • Help children better cope with nausea and pain
  • Connect with their children in a positive way during and after their hospital stay

Redkite Music Box is easy to access from any device you access the myredkite.com.au portal. Dip in and out to:

  • Music playlists for different occasions and age groups
  • Choose from a range of musical activities hosted by Music Therapist, Matt Ralph, to help with relaxation, pain management and nausea
  • Play a guided music games together as a family

Incorporating music into your day can be a simple form of self-care.

  • Create your very own playlist of relaxing or energising songs, create a daily music routine, and even listen while multitasking
  • Singing or humming along can quickly reduce stress
  • Sharing a quick song with your child strengthens your bond, and if you play an instrument, consider a family music session

Music not only supports your mental health but also strengthens family connections.

Music playlists can be a wonderful way to nurture your child’s love for music and support their evolving tastes.

  • For younger children, soothing lullabies and playful nursery rhymes can offer comfort and enjoyment. As they grow, consider adding age-appropriate songs with simple lyrics and catchy melodies to encourage early learning and creativity.
  • For older kids and teenagers, you can introduce a wider variety of music genres, allowing them to explore their preferences and develop their musical identity.

We have created a selection of Spotify playlist links for a range of different purposes and age groups:

  • Sleepy Time and Active playlists for 0-5-year-olds
  • Family Dance playlists for the whole family
  • Relaxation playlists for older children, teenagers, and parents
  • Guided Relaxation playlists for young people (16-18) and parents

Encouraging open conversations with your child about their music tastes and choices and collaborating on playlists is a supportive way to strengthen your bond. The shared musical experience can support emotional wellbeing, stimulate creativity, and foster positive connection.

Check out the Music, Relaxation, Guided Relaxation and Sleepy time playlists in the Playlists page of Redkite’s Music Box!

Music therapy is a therapeutic, evidence-based practice that can make an enormous difference during what is often an incredibly challenging time. It also offers opportunities to strengthen parent-child bonds, which can be really stretched when a child spends long periods of time in hospital.
