Redkite Social Workers: Purpose, values and professional framework

On March 19th we celebrate World Social Work Day, a time to appreciate the global efforts of social workers. They tackle everything from personal and family issues to broader societal challenges and even humanitarian crisis.

Social workers advocate for policy changes to promote fairness and well-being, and they conduct research to better understand wider social issues. It is a day to focus on the human side of society and upholding ethical standards to strive for positive social change and empower individuals and communities worldwide.

Social Work as a profession is guided by the Australian Association of Social Workers practice standards 2023 (recently updated) and aligns with the Code of Ethics 2020. The purpose is to promote trust and confidence in the profession for the public and service users.

Redkite social workers support families throughout the challenging times when there is a child diagnosed with cancer. Our team of social workers are childhood cancer specialists and have been there for countless families and children throughout their cancer experience. They work closely with Redkite’s Support Team who provide the behind-the-scenes support such as; answering your calls or email queries, listening and empathising with your situation, making sure you get connected with a social worker when you are feeling emotionally overwhelmed, sending you supportive and helpful resources, and ensuring vouchers are sent out or a bill is paid.

This collaborative approach social workers adopt also goes beyond the ‘behind the scenes’ and is represented by our Redkite Psychosocial Support Framework addressing areas that represent many of families throughout the challenges, worries and feeling overwhelmed as they navigate the heaviness of a childhood cancer diagnosis.

Our Social Workers listen and work closely with families, aiming for genuine collaboration built on respect, understanding and trust. They acknowledge that clients are experts in their own experience and lives. Examples include:

  • Listening, empathising, and walking alongside a mother’s worry and distress waiting for results from a scan if her child’s tumour has grown larger or reduced in size.
  • Assessing a family’s financial situation and providing comprehensive recommendations and referrals for ongoing complex financial support.

Our Social Workers acknowledge and enable the strengths of the individuals they support while also sharing their knowledge, skills, and options to link in with other support services. Examples include:

  • Empowering a single parent facing their child’s neuroblastoma diagnosis by acknowledging their resilience and strengths, facilitating connections with family, and guiding them through the upcoming challenges ahead.
  • Sitting and reflecting with a mother who has made significant progress in managing her own anxiety and stress around triggering thoughts and the difficulty she has sitting in the unknown remission phase of cancer.

Our Social Workers ensure they are responsive to a families’ needs and risks, with a focus on their wellbeing. They support families based on their current challenges, without labelling, judging, or defining them solely by those challenges. Social Workers separate the challenge from the person. Examples include:

  • Expressing concern and offering support and service referrals to a mother, father and their 4 children who are in a complex housing situation, facing the risk of eviction and homelessness. Continuing to provide ongoing support and following up as needed.
  • Listening to a mother’s concern her child is being verbally bullied at school because they look different. Investigating this further to assess if there has been any risk of harm and supporting and advocating for the family in communication with the school and family of the child who has been demonstrating this bullying behaviour.

Our Social Workers are focussed on improving cancer support and community services better by working together, having an influence, building skills, and advocating for families dealing with childhood cancer and the community they live in.

  • Our Social Workers are guided by the needs and voices of families. This shapes their professional development in the oncology sector to ensure their ongoing education, training and networking opportunities is tailored to the needs of families.
  • Advocacy initiatives aimed at fair and equitable access for people socially, in health, economic, environmental, and political resources. Redkite’s leaders and social workers were invited to sit and witness during the Parliamentary Inquiry into the Carer Recognition Act at the end of 2023 recognising the immense contribution of unpaid carers.

Social Workers acknowledge the value of diversity and the uniqueness of each family dealing with childhood cancer. Treating families equally and fair and walking alongside them as they overcome any obstacles that may exist between them and the support they need. Examples include:

  • Assessing a client’s need for support when trying to navigate a government service after concerns of unfair treatment. Offering to act as a bridge between the client and the service, ensuring the client’s needs are understood and their claim is processed promptly, especially if it is urgent.
  • Taking the time to understand and show respect for a person’s cultural and upbringing when supporting them through the grieving process.

Our Social Workers base Redkite’s services on research and assess them regularly. They adhere to strong professional ethics and aim to provide families useful knowledge, skills, and resources.

  • Through education and experience in paediatric oncology, a social worker can guide a parent through counselling sessions that allow a safe space to acknowledge difficult emotions and gaining strategies help the parent cope with some of her own big feelings of grief, anxiousness, and sadness.
  • Redkite’s Social Work and Services and Impact teams continually review best practices and family feedback to improve and create new services to support families through the cancer journey.
