Book Club: Social worker picks for November

Books from Redkite’s library can help with conversations about cancer and big feelings. Below, our social workers have reviewed some of their favourite books for families.

Hero Hunter and the Wonky White Cells

“Hero Hunter” is a great book for explaining the diagnosis and treatment of Childhood Leukaemia for children and adults with easy to understand analogies and illustration.

Hero Hunter was written by Sarah, a family member of a diagnosed child who Redkite have supported.

“Hero Hunter is a great book for explaining the diagnosis and treatment of Childhood Leukaemia for children and adults”.

Upside Down and Backwards

Ever since his first ride, Bryce has been obsessed with roller coasters. But when Bryce’s sister Paige is diagnosed with cancer, his life becomes one of the craziest roller coasters he would ever ride.

With the help of his family, friends, and support group, Bryce starts to feel steadier and not so out of control. Together with his family, he gets through the ups, downs, twists, and flips of cancer.

“A great story told from a sibling’s perspective that dives into the challenges of being the siblings of a diagnosed child.”

What Cancer Taught Me

Jake has written this book about his experiences of being diagnosed with Burkitt’s Lymphoma, a form of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, as a teenager and going through treatment. Jake speaks very honestly of his experiences, especially the very challenging ones, and it’s an enlightening and inspirational story of what Jake has learned from having cancer.

“Jake is honest about the struggles, but still positive about what you can learn from facing cancer and what kind of things can help when going through treatment and after treatment.”

The Hair Holiday

“The Hair Holiday” is an uplifting and colorful book about the experience of losing your hair during treatment for cancer. Written in a light hearted way it’s great for cheering up a child who is struggling with their hair loss or to start conversations.

“A lovely story to explain hair loss during cancer treatment. Great for the diagnosed child, but also siblings and friends.”

The Feelings Book

‘The Feelings Book’ illustrates the wide range of moods we all experience. Targeted to young children first beginning to read, this book will inspire kids to discuss their many feelings in an age-friendly, accessible format. ‘The Feelings Book’ is designed to encourage early literacy, enhance emotional development, celebrate multiculturalism, and promote character growth.

“A great book to encourage children to talk about how they are feeling. This book explains different feelings and emotions and that it’s okay to not be happy all the time.”

The Homesick Club

Monica and Hannah are school kids in the big city. Together, they have formed the Homesick Club, because they are both from far away.

When a new teacher, Miss Shelby, arrives from Texas, the girls discover that she misses her home, too. The girls ask Miss Shelby to join their club, then Monica decides she will bring a surprise for show and tell — a surprise that brings Miss Shelby close to tears.

“Very sweet book. Inclusive and shows a good representation of all CALD families and challenges kids may face. A good discussion around feeling homesick.”
