Volunteer profile: Joshua

December 2015 12-year-old Joshua is not only one of our youngest volunteers, he is also a passionate advocate for Redkite.

Introduced to Redkite by his mother, an employee at long-time Redkite supporter BOC, Joshua remembers the first time he supported us, by purchasing a bauble to hang from a Christmas tree on a wall at BOC’s office.

There’s been no looking back ever since for Joshua, who loves to wear a Redkite pin to show his support. Recently, he raised funds for Redkite at the Sydney Live Steam Locomotive Society’s Train Park Open Day. Earlier this year, he also baked red velvet cookies for another fundraiser, and legged it across the football field to convince soccer gala spectators to purchase raffle cards for another. He even successfully roped in a couple of his friends, Dinuk and Lachlan, to volunteer with him.

Joshua’s first volunteering experience is dearest to him, when he lent a hand during the Sydney Swans Celebrity Match for Redkite. Joshua helped by filling up helium balloons, unloading food supplies from the van, setting up stalls, decorating the Redkite tent and more. His day was made when he was asked to participate in the Guard of Honour, and got to high five his favorite Sydney Swans player, Adam Goodes.

“Volunteers make the world a better place for everybody. A little time you spend for another gives them hope. It is better for you too as you feel that you have loved them for who they are,” says Joshua.

Thank you to Joshua and all our volunteers, who are firm believers in creating change and building passion to support children and young people with cancer and their families.
