Dare to Dream 2020: meet two of the winners

Last year, Miranda, from the Gold Coast and Lara, from Dural, were two of just eight young Australians to be awarded a Redkite and Coles Dare to Dream scholarship.

Funded with the support of Coles, the scholarship can be put towards education, career or life goals that have been disrupted due to the impact cancer has on a child’s physical and mental wellbeing.

Miranda developed a passion for nursing and art while being treated for thyroid cancer and is using her $3000 scholarship to support her Bachelor of Nursing and Art Therapist Diploma. Lara, in remission from Hodgkin lymphoma, wants to start her own conveyancing firm.

Miranda said she admired the nurses who treated her and the art therapists who worked with her.

“I want to be able to show other sick children that there is still compassion in this world. I was able to express my inner emotions through art. It really helped me and it was a powerful coping mechanism. I really want to be able to continue help other young people struggling with cancer through art. This scholarship will help me immensely in my goals towards becoming a nurse and art therapist”

For Lara, cancer impacted every aspect of her life, from schooling, friendships and even her self-esteem. But it didn’t take away her dream of being able to help people make their dreams of home ownership come true.

“I want to be able to support them. I want to be able to say congratulations and see their smile when they purchase their first home so that they can start a family and make happy memories”
