The Battle Below the Belt

Daniel Schmaling

The ‘C’ word – cancer – is a disease nobody wants to be diagnosed with, let alone when they are only 16. But that’s what happened to Daniel Schmaling.

Like many young Queenslanders, Daniel led an active, healthy life and played a variety of sports. Then one day, he discovered a lump in his neck which led to the shocking diagnosis, the challenge of accepting he was ill, and the physical and mental ordeal of medical treatment. But fast forward and Daniel is now able to say he survived cancer. He hopes by sharing his story, he can help others.

‘The Battle Below the Belt’ is an engaging account of one teenager’s battle with cancer. From how to tell your family and friends, to tips for dealing with the side effects of chemotherapy, and fighting the psychological demons that plague anyone suffering from a life-threatening disease, Daniel writes about his experiences with candour and humour.
