International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
Every day in Australia, 3 families hear the words “your child has cancer” and their world is turned upside down. In September, for International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month we shine the spotlight on children’s cancer and the impact that it has on families.
Ten-year-old Charli was diagnosed with leukemia in 2020 and her family are being supported by Redkite. Her mum, Faye told us why Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is important to her family and how Redkite has helped them.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month which is very close to our hearts after our daughter Charli was diagnosed with leukaemia (blood cancer) last year.
This September we are supporting Redkite who continue to help us so much. If you haven’t heard of Redkite before (and I hope you never need them) here’s just a snippet of the incredible support they’ve given us over the last long 15 months:
💛 Big bag of essentials in the first few days of our transfer to Sydney Kids Hospital so that we had toothpaste, shower gel, blankets, coffee cups (the list is looong!)…basically the stuff you don’t have time to pack when you end up in emergency dealing with childhood cancer. 😭
💛 They fund social workers who helped us navigate the traumatic new world we were thrown into…the list of things you need help with and have no clue on is huge!
💛 Financial assistance to pay for utility bills, groceries and petrol. Having a child with cancer can take an enormous toll on family finances.
💛 Education grant to help families buy a device for their child to use for remote learning. This helped us buy Charli a laptop so that she could learn from home and hospital.
💛 Weekly online groups to help parents, like us, connect with social workers, counsellors and other parents.
💛 1:1 counselling to help families, like ours, deal with the trauma of having a child diagnosed with cancer.
The list goes on, but you get the gist – they do incredible work!
