Education and career support consultants
Redkite’s education and career support (ECS) consultants offer personalised assistance for 15-24 year olds who’ve had cancer at any stage and would like help getting back on track with work, study or training.
For a variety of complex reasons, young people who have or have had cancer can often feel disconnected from education, vocational training or their jobs. It may be that the physical impact of the disease or its treatment means a desired career is no longer practical. Perhaps returning to school would mean making a whole new set of friends because earlier peers have moved on. For some, serious illness can prompt a reassessment of personal values and purpose.
A Redkite ECS consultant is a bit like a mentor, but with an understanding of the specific obstacles that cancer can bring. Working in partnership with the young people they support, they can help identify short and long term goals then assist in developing a realistic plan to make it happen.
With their in-depth knowledge of career and education resources, the consultant will provide a clear picture of available opportunities. Plus they’ll share practical tips and techniques to help connect with school, tertiary education, training or work, including financial assistance for tutoring and equipment, and other education or career needs. With the consultant’s help, young people will be able to develop a plan for the future that’s right for them.
In many areas, meetings can take place face to face. Otherwise consultants and young people can connect via phone, email, text or video conference.
We recognise that for many people who have had cancer, side effects of the disease or its treatment can sometimes occur many years after remission. These "late effects" can have a significant impact on work and education activities. ECS consultants are available for 15-24 year olds who’ve been diagnosed at any stage in their life.
