An 80km walk for kids facing cancer

Heartbreak to Hope – We celebrate Rhiannon’s 14-hour 80km for Kids’ Cancer walk from Manly to Bondi along Sydney’s iconic harbour coastal track.

As Head of Insight and Impact at Redkite, Rhiannon Edge is all too aware that every year in Australia, over 1,000 families  hear the devastating words “your child has cancer”

“For those families, their lives are changed forever, and it can feel impossible to hold it together” Rhiannon says.

“Over the last 3 years, since working at Redkite, I’ve witnessed firsthand the incredible work that Redkite does, helping these families navigate the profound emotional and practical challenges that follow a childhood cancer diagnosis” she explains.

“I hear stories every day from families about the impact of Redkite’s services, from our Redkite Red Bag given to families’ at diagnosis, which is full of support materials and practical things, through to the counselling and peer support services provided to improve families’ emotional wellbeing and resilience.”

In May, families and community members took on the challenge and walked 100km raising vital funds for families facing childhood cancer.

Everyone who participated in the 2025 Heartbreak to Hope Walk, helped to provide counselling to families, keep food on the table with grocery vouchers, and help pay the bills for families who have to drop everything at short notice to be with their child in hospital for weeks at a time.

Rhiannon jumped at the chance to participate in Redkite’s annual Heartbreak to Hope Walk, which sees wonderful supporters walk 100km during the month of May and raise vital funds to help families facing childhood cancer.

“Me and a wonderful friend of mine decided to take on the huge challenge of walking 80km in one day, from Manly to Bondi, tracing the iconic Sydney Harbour coastline!” Rhiannon said. “I then put the call out to my colleagues and was thrilled to be joined by 5 intrepid women, including our very own CEO, Monique Keighery.”

Rhiannon has so far raised an incredible $2,190 to help families facing childhood cancer and has walked 107kms.

She says that walking with her friends and colleagues made the challenge even more worthwhile.

“You kept me sane, distracted me from the blisters and pain and plied me with welcomed treats to get me through those last few kilometres” Rhiannon told her team “I couldn’t have got through it without you!”
