A Winning Partnership

Sydney Swans Redkite Day inspires AFL’s Newest Recruit

Redkite and Sydney Swans team up to provide another memorable day for families facing childhood cancer.

The Sydney Swans have been partnering with Redkite for over 23 years with their hugely popular Redkite Day coming up on Saturday, 13 May at the Swan’s home ground, the SCG.

The game aims to raise funds for Redkite with fans and members encouraged to donate at the game.

As is tradition on Redkite Day, that families supported by Redkite are invited to attend the match and participate in the guard of honour as the players run onto the field.

Last year’s 2022 Redkite Day broke a record amount of funds raised and had a life-changing impact on one particular Redkite family who attended.

Mahala and her husband Andrew, a Redkite family based on the Central Coast, attended the game with their three children Louis, Lola, and Sunny. Louis was diagnosed with B cell lymphoblastic lymphoma in July 2019 when he was five years old.

The family was supported by Redkite’s Financial Assistance program which helped to pay their car registration, and electricity bills and provide grocery vouchers.

The Redkite Day match proved to be a hit with Louis, who was particularly captivated by the game. He enjoyed the day so much that he decided to start playing AFL himself.

Mahala was delighted that the event had helped her son to find a new passion and a way to stay active and healthy.

Speaking about the event, Mahala said, “The day was amazing, and we are so grateful to Redkite and the Sydney Swans for this opportunity. We had a fantastic time, and Louis has been talking about it non-stop since.

It was a great break from the usual routine of treatment and appointments and provided some much-needed family time. We are also thrilled that Louis has started playing AFL as a result of this event.”

Redkite’s CEO, Monique Keighery, said the initiative was a great success and highlighted the importance of events like this for families facing cancer.

“We know that a child’s cancer affects the whole family, who often go through significant stress and trauma for long periods. Events like this raise awareness of the challenges they face and the vital funds needed to ensure they have the support they need to get through it.

We are thrilled that Louis has started playing AFL, and we hope other families find the same excitement and interests that Mahala and her family have experienced.”

The Redkite and Sydney Swan’s collaboration is set to continue, with plans for future events already in the works.
