Why Wes loves volunteering at Redkite

Wes Thomson volunteering for Redkite

Why did you start volunteering with Redkite?

When I joined SAP in 2015, I learned that a number of my new workmates volunteered with Redkite in their spare time. They told me Redkite was a really well-respected charity and giving back to my community has always been important to me, so I was immediately interested in getting involved.

What type of work have you done as a volunteer with Redkite?

Most of the roles I’ve taken up have involved engaging with guests at events like the SAP Casino Night for Redkite, the Redkite Corporate Quiz Nights or the Rugby Championship Games fundraiser in 2015. I get to interact with the guests, educate them about the many wonderful ways their donations can support children and young people with cancer and their families, and encourage them to generously donate to the cause.

What’s your favourite thing about volunteering?

I think it’s knowing that I’ve contributed towards supporting families facing cancer navigate some of the most challenging times of their lives. As I raise funds for Redkite, I also learn how many families benefit. And it’s a truly special experience knowing how many families my volunteering impacts.

What is the trickiest part about volunteering?

The trickiest part of volunteering is the initial period of encouraging participants in these events to donate to the cause. You have to get past the awkwardness of asking and realise that the guests who attend these events attend with the view of donating. After this, it becomes a lot easier and, actually, very enjoyable.

How do you benefit personally from volunteering?

Besides the satisfaction I get out of knowing I’ve directly impacted families who really need support, I’ve found that volunteering for Redkite has helped me build my communication, leadership, problem solving and teamwork skills. It’s also broadened my network to the most wonderful and genuine people to work with. To say it’s a rewarding experience is certainly an understatement!

What would you tell anyone considering getting involved in volunteering?

If you’re like me and have always wanted to give back to your community, to people who truly need support, look no further than Redkite. Get involved now, as each time you volunteer you realise how impactful your time and energy is. Volunteering is also a lot of fun and great for personal development.

Redkite offers volunteer opportunities right across the Australia. Be it volunteering in one of our four regional offices or supporting our packed program of fundraising events, we’d love to welcome you into the Redkite community!
