bereavement support

When a child dies, it's one of the most devastating things that can happen to any family. Special times such as birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas can be especially difficult. Redkite is here for you with financial support and support packs during the first year of bereavement, and grief counselling and support groups at any time. Many people have found reading one of our books on grief and loss to be helpful. You can connect with us in a way that feels right for you during this difficult time.

 By My Side: for parents

By My Side is a book of quotes from parents whose child has died from cancer. The book was produced by Redkite in partnership with researcher Leigh Donovan, UNSW and Kids Cancer Centre. Over 100 parents generously shared the story of their child's cancer experience, end of life and family's journey into bereavement. You can order the book for free by contacting us on 1800 REDKITE (1800 733 548) or

The quotes and images in the book, and accompanying video (above) represent the experience of these parents; they may not be representative of all bereaved parents. Once you've watched the video, please consider completing this survey to let us know what you thought of it.

Walking Alongside: for health professionals

Conversations with parents about their child's dying are never going to be easy. If you don't have much experience or training in this area, the best way to gain an understanding of that experience is to listen to others who have been there before. The Walking Alongside video shares the insights of health professionals who regularly care for children whose cancer cannot be cured. The accompanying worksheet, Conversation Starters, can be used to initiate discussions with colleagues about how best to support a family through the end of their child's life, and into bereavement.

You can also call us on 1800 REDKITE (1800 733 548) Monday to Friday, 9am – 7pm AEST. We’ll always try to connect you with the same person each time. If you'd rather get in touch with us by email, contact and we’ll get back to you in less than two working days.

support groups

We offer regular phone-based support groups for bereaved parents facilitated by Redkite’s Social Workers, with topics decided by those taking part.

These groups are an opportunity to connect with others, share experiences and talk about ways to cope. We offer groups for parents whose child has died recently, and for those who have been bereaved for a longer time.

financial support

We can help to cover some funeral costs and other expenses during times of financial need in the year after bereavement. Contact us on 1800 REDKITE (1800 733 548) or to find out more.

support packs

Redkite has developed an information and support pack for those who have recently experienced the death of a loved one from cancer.

The pack includes:

  • Two books exploring themes of grief and loss, Beyond Words and The Little Book of Loss and Grief, along with a bookmark.
  • A memory candle.
  • Information about how we can continue to support you and those close to you.

If you’d like us to send you one of these packs or find out more about them, contact our support team on 1800 REDKITE (1800 733 548) or
