Group Support

A safe space for people with a shared experience

We host many different support groups and programs for families

How can we help?

Our group support programs give families all around Australia a chance to connect with people in a similar situation and help parents, carers and children overcome unique challenges specific to childhood cancer.

Types of support groups

Redkite hosts a variety of support groups, from casual catch-ups to educational programs on specific topics. Groups are held online using Microsoft Teams.

Coffee Groups

Regular, casual catch-ups for parents and carers. Drop in, drop out as you wish.

Connect Groups

Groups that connect parents or carers in a similar role or to discuss a specific topic.

Cascade Program

Educational program for parents and carers of children who have finished treatment.

Children’s Groups

Age-specific groups for diagnosed children and their siblings.

It also enabled me to connect back into a community of people who at once identified and empathised with my journey. Every parent had a different perspective on their experiences so I was able to gain strength from a parent whose child was further down the track in their journey, and similarly, I was able to lend support to a parent whose child had been off treatment for less time than Joseph. The impact was very powerful.

Group Guidelines & Confidentiality

In the interest of ensuring all members of the group feel safe and respected, we wish to propose some initial group guidelines. These guidelines are subject to review as deemed necessary by the facilitators and the group participants. Any changes will be made in consultation with group participants during the session. Please feel free to raise any questions you have about the guidelines with the facilitators.

  • Confidentiality needs to be respected by the group members. As such what we discuss in the group needs to stay in the group.
  • Each of us needs to respect each other’s opinion so that everyone feels safe and valued.
  • It is helpful to give suggestions rather than advice  (“what works for me” – rather than “you should”)
  • It is helpful to listen to others, speak in turn (one at a time), and identify ourselves first (so we all know who is speaking).
  • Please allow equal time for each group member to speak, and to encourage group members to speak to each other.
  • People will feel and express different emotions during and after the group, and that’s ok. Please know its ok to take time out if needed, and one of the facilitators can contact you after the session if needed.
  • As group members may not be aware of who is in the room for other participants, we ask you to be mindful of the language you use whilst participating in the group.
  • Contact information of group participants can be shared, but through the facilitators and with the consent of the participant.
  • Redkite and the facilitators are not responsible for any contact between participants outside the group session.
  • We understand you may have children at home, so please know its ok to take time out to manage things as needed.

  • Information shared by parents in the group will be kept confidential. All participants will be asked to respect this. The two Redkite Social Workers will maintain participants’ confidentiality unless there is a duty of care or legal requirement (e.g. if there is a significant risk to someone’s safety) that requires them to notify another relevant party, as per the National Privacy Principles.
  • If you want to read our privacy policy in full, visit www.redkite.org.au/privacy-notice or contact us and we’ll send you a copy in the mail.
  • We may also use your details to inform you of other Redkite services that we think may be relevant to you, and to invite you to family events.
  • From time to time, we may also contact you for research and evaluation purposes and/or the opportunity to contribute to Redkite and its services. You’ll of course have the opportunity to participate or not as these opportunities arise.
  • If you’d prefer not to receive updates or invitations, let us know at any time by contacting 1800 REDKITE (1800 733 548) or support@redkite.org.au. (Asking to be taken off a mailing list won’t affect your entitlement to future services in any way).
  • Redkite and the group facilitators may contact individual participants or the entire group via phone & email regarding participating in the group.
  • Participants are more than welcome to have contact with each other outside the group, however, please know Redkite and the facilitators cannot share contact information without consent.

  • Confidentiality – what we discuss in this group stays in this group so we ask that you join in a private and quiet space.
  • In this group we respect everyone’s opinions and differences so that all feel safe and valued.
  • Remember that everyone has their own experiences and feelings
  • Listen to others, take turns, make sure everyone has a chance to share
  • This group is a safe space to share as little or as much of your story as you’d like
  • During the sessions, you may feel different emotions and that is okay. Let Katja or Lis know if you need time out and they will talk to you more about what you’re feeling after the group
  • In this group we are kind with our words
  • In this group we would prefer to have your camera on but feel free to switch it off if you need to

All information discussed in a session or group will be kept confidential. Redkite Social Workers will maintain confidentiality unless there is a risk to safety.

What you say stays in here unless:

  • Someone is hurting you
  • You want to hurt someone
  • You want to hurt yourself
  • You give permission to share with a trusted adult
