A smashing community fundraiser
This October, the Sydney French Open was held in Kingsford. The two-day tennis tournament helps support New Caledonian families who must travel to The Children’s Hospital in Westmead for their child’s cancer treatment. Within a few days of diagnosis, they are flying from Noumea to Sydney, arriving at Westmead and beginning their cancer journey with multiple surgeries and chemotherapy. There is a huge cultural and language barrier which makes their whole stay in Australia so hard. It can be up to two years of being surrounded by people who don’t speak your language and whilst facing the most difficult time in their lives, it’s incredibly isolating for them.
Thanks to the generosity of our amazing supporters like you, Redkite can help with essentials such as food vouchers as well as phone sim cards and top ups, Opal cards, and a tablet for them to stay connected to their family back home. Redkite’s Wellbeing Coordinator, Jessica, organises a weekly afternoon tea for all the new Caledonian families to come together and connect.
The weekend was a big success, and it was wonderful watching everyone come together and connect over tennis, French food and nice weather. We would like to say a big thank you to all who came and took part, we hope to see everyone again in 2023!
Let’s get started
