Coast to Care: Running to Raise Awareness

In 2023, David and Lindsey had their lives turned upside down when their 4-month-old daughter, Harriet, was diagnosed with multi-system Langerhans cell histiocytosis. That same year, David decided to begin his fundraising and to give back to Redkite.

In June 2023 David and Lindsey had their lives turned upside down when their 4-month-old daughter, Harriet, was diagnosed with multi-system Langerhans cell histiocytosis. Those first few weeks were filled with stress and uncertainty, but that’s when Redkite stepped in and offered emotional and practical support through a social worker and a Redkite Diagnosis Support Pack (Red Bag) filled with supplies to help them during their hospital stays.

Harriet’s rare disease required weekly trips to the hospital, meaning the cost of parking, filling up the car with fuel, and prescription medicine was adding up. Lindsey had to sacrifice returning to work after maternity leave so the family was down to one income. Redkite helped ease their financial stress with vouchers for fuel, groceries and bills.

“We, as a family, are so grateful for the support Redkite has shown us throughout Harriets diagnosis and treatment.

That same year, David decided to begin his fundraising and to give back to Redkite. David also wanted to raise awareness for multi-system Langerhans cell histiocytosis by running from the Gold Coast University to Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. After over 10 months of training, David successfully ran the 73kms in April 2024. With friends and family by his side and Harriet waiting for him at the finish line, David achieved an incredible feat and raised over $7,900 for Redkite.

To all the amazing supporters of Redkite, David has this to say:

“To all the people that have donated to Redkite, you are incredible. There are so many families out there, like mine, that rely on help from charities like Redkite so keep it up!””
