Lencia, with Redkite Wellbeing Coordinator Jessica.

Learn more about how Redkite Wellbeing Coordinators make a difference to families.

Jessica, a Redkite Wellbeing Coordinator, shares her story of helping families during their hardest time.

Thanks to our wonderful supporters, Redkite can offer assistance to families the moment they step onto the oncology ward. One of these services includes speaking with a Wellbeing Coordinator like Jessica who stays on the ward and is the go-to person for everything wellbeing-related, including handing out the Redkite Red Bags.

In her own words, Jess talks about her experience being a Wellbeing Coordinator for Redkite:

“Just as no two families are the same, no two days are the same on the oncology ward where I work. On any given day, there might be a family who’s just arrived on the ward while others are getting ready to go home. In one bed, a child might be feeling quite well, while in the bed next door, a child might be having their worst day yet.

Along with connecting families to Redkite’s services, an important part of my role is to give families the space to feel whatever it is that they are feeling. I try to spend as much time as I can with the more vulnerable families, just sitting with them and listening. We might have a coffee while they tell me about what’s going on with them and their child.

Sometimes they cry and I sit with them while they’re having their big emotions about the really scary cancer journey that they’re on.

At other times, it’s just talking to them about their home and their family, about their life they will go back to after the cancer journey. I bring a listening ear and space to talk on the hard days or a conversation about something other than cancer, to take their mind off everything going on.

I’m trying to connect as many people as possible to the social work team so they can get the support that the whole family needs, but also just pop in to see the families on the ward to have those conversations just on a day-to-day basis about how they’re travelling and to see if I can do anything, no matter how small it is, to make their day easier.”

None of this would be possible without Redkite supporters like you.

“Redkite has been so important to us… it’s the first time we have experienced this kind of help before, even at home in New Caledonia we never had help like this.”
