A group of up to 23 women took to the helm of a 100ft gaff-rigged schooner to compete in the 2010 Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race to raise vital funds for Redkite. The novice female sailors, including Redkite’s very own Yvonne Hayes, braved unpredictable sea conditions, brave squalls and seasickness in the race over the Easter Long Weekend. Yvonne, who works in the Queensland office, has no open water sailing experience so was feeling anxious about what was in store for her out at sea. However, she was proud to be so personally involved. “This is such a unique way to raise valuable funds for Redkite,” explains Yvonne. “I thankfully didn't suffer sea sickness and to be personally taking on this challenge was a very special and worthwhile experience. The funds raised will make a real difference for the families who need our services.” Aided by seven highly skilled mentors during the trip, including a skipper, sailing master, navigator and a cook, the novice crew worked together during all phases of the 308 nautical mile journey aboard the “South Passage”. “WomenRace4…” won the cruising division in its first outing in 2007 and placed second in 2008 and 2009. In 2008, it was also named the “best outfitted and presented crew”, proving that inexperienced sailors cannot only complete the race, but also look professional at the same time! WomenRace4 … is a non-profit unincorporated association that has been formed to oversee this voyage, its fourth consecutive year, with Redkite as the nominated charity. All crew members source their own sponsor to enable them to take part. Yvonne is sponsored by SAP, one of Redkite’s loyal corporate partners. “WomenRace4…” have so far raised over $17,000 but are hoping to hit the $20,000 mark.
