Upcoming telegroups for parents



Redkite telegroupRedkite is soon to commence two telegroups:

  • A telegroup for parents of children who have completed treatment for cancer or are on maintenance or in remission.
  • A telegroup for bereaved parents who have lost a child or young person to cancer.


Telegroups are peer support phone groups which are professionally facilitated by Redkite Social Workers. During weekly sessions participants share concerns, discuss key issues and gather support and coping strategies from other parents going through similar experiences. 

Telegroup for parents of children who have been treated for cancer

The telegroup for parents of children with cancer provides support in a safe and relaxed environment. Themes covered may include discussion around adjustment of family life after a child or young person’s cancer treatment, adjustment to a “new normal” life, impact of treatment on the child and siblings and managing ongoing fears and concerns. This telegroup will start in early April.

Telegroup for bereaved parents

Losing a child or young person to cancer is one of the most devastating events that can happen to any parent and family. Telegroups enable parents to access a network of support that is not always easy - particularly if families are isolated from cancer specific support.

Counsellors facilitate the Telegroup for bereaved parents around the impact of bereavement for the whole family; the differing ways family members grieve; the range of feelings and emotions experienced; and creative and safe ways of keeping memories alive.


Participants in Redkite’s pilot telegroup for bereaved parents found it reduced their sense of isolation, while allowing them to share their experiences and learn from others about how to cope with the death of their child.
 

The upcoming telegroup for bereaved parents is designed for parents who lost a child or young person more than six months ago. This telegroup will start in July.
