Standing tall
When Emily was admitted to hospital, her family received a Redkite Red Bag containing information, toiletries and other practical items to help during the disbelief of the initial diagnosis and treatment.
At this point her dad, Nick, was still in deep shock that his little girl had a brain tumour. Redkite Social Workers offered emotional and practical support. “Our family was falling apart and we quickly realised that these dedicated social workers would help us stand tall for our daughter.”
Little Emily underwent two major operations and months of chemotherapy. When Emily needed radiotherapy to her brain and spine, a Redkite Music Therapist was also on hand to help. Emily, only four-years-old, awake and alone in a room, needed to lie perfectly still for treatment. So the music therapist sang and chatted via a DVD screen. “It was thanks to the assistance of hospital staff and the amazing Redkite Music Therapist that Emily got through those last weeks of radiotherapy.”
Emily is back at school now and recently received a Redkite education grant to help her catch up on her missed schooling.
Redkite receives no government funding. As Nick put it, the people who support Redkite are “our white knights”.
