Ironman Rodney goes the distance

Rodney Gregg knows what it’s like to deal with the devastating effects of cancer; both his father and his niece have been diagnosed but it is their strength and courage that inspired Rodney to compete in the Busselton Ironman Triathlon on 5th December to raise vital funds for Redkite.

“I want to raise funds and awareness for Redkite to support children and young people through cancer and their families,” explains Rodney. “Children who are battling cancer, they are the true heroes.

“I know that it will take a lot for me to finish but the thoughts of my dad and niece, and my 5-year-old son waiting at the finish line, will get me through the race.”

Competing in a specifically designed Redkite suit for the triathlon, Rodney will be participating in a 3.8km swim, a 180.2km bicycle ride and a 42km run – all in a time of 17 hours. Around 1300 competitors will be taking part from each state and territory of Australia, as well as international athletes.

“My father’s courage not to let this disease beat him is the inspiration I have to do my best,” says Rodney. “This one's for you Dad!”

As a teacher, Rodney has been working tirelessly to raise vital funds for Redkite and has been getting fantastic support from the community and his students. Rodney has been raising money by holding a raffle, selling ice cups at school, and organising a dress red ‘Spirit Day’.

Deborah Hill from Redkite said: “As we receive no government funding and rely entirely on community support, we are really grateful to Rodney for raising awareness about Redkite’s vital services to help families with emotional, financial and educational assistance. We will all be cheering him on and hope he does well.”
