Joel flies across the Yarra River in his homemade kite costume

Joel Gresham from St Kilda in Victoria attempted to fly the longest distance across the Yarra River in the Moomba Birdman Rally on Sunday 7 March using his homemade red kite costume to raise funds for…Redkite!

Living in a one-bedroom apartment, Joel was forced to stack his couches on top of each other to make room for his contraption.

“It’s a very tight squeeze in my apartment but it has been great fun to make,” says Joel.

Joel flew 2.5 metres across the river, an impressive effort, on what was a very windy and wet day.

“I have been a spectator at the Birdman Rally before which was really amusing. This year, I thought I would give it a go to help a good cause – Redkite, who help families through childhood cancer.”

A mechanical engineer by trade, Joel made his kite (which measures 4 metres by 2.2 metres) out of aluminium tubing and red nylon, the same material used for parachutes. At least it was “water proof”, he says.

Giovina Cicchitti from Redkite is thrilled at the novel way Joel has raised funds for Redkite saying, “The Birdman Rally is a fun and unique way to raise awareness for Redkite and we were excited to see Joel take flight in his red kite costume across the Yarra River!

“Redkite receives no government funding so it is the support of people in the community like Joel that enables us to provide practical support to children and young people with cancer and their families.”

Joel has raised over $600 for Redkite. If you would like to make a donation please visit:
