When Sue’s three-year-old daughter Amy was diagnosed with brain cancer, her heart ached for her little girl and her five-year-old son Matthew. “I think people forget about the siblings and what they are going through,” said Sue.

The family moved cities to be with Amy while she underwent intensive treatment. “As I didn’t leave the hospital, we hadn’t had an opportunity to meet any families from Matthew’s school. Essentially he had no one to play with for 10 months.”

Sue and her husband, Andrew, spent their days at hospital caring for their daughter. “One of us would pick up Matthew from school and bring him back to the ward. It was just so hard for him. Life had stopped for him as well.”

The first day out together, away from the rigours of treatment in hospital, was at a Redkite Family Day at the cinema. “For Matthew it was a chance to have fun with his sister, the other children and with us,” said Sue. It made an important difference at a very difficult time. “It seems like a simple thing but it meant a lot to us. I saw the light back in Matthew’s eyes. He was being a little boy again. It was just so beautiful to see”.
