Going the distance
While out walking one day, little Alanna complained of being very sore and tired. This normally active four-year-old was about to spend years fighting for her life against cancer.
Her mother, Gillian, wants to tell Redkite supporters: “Your donation takes the load off while we’re caring for our kids”. Gillian was pregnant at the time. She could not be near the toxic drugs that were being injected into her little girl. As she said: “My child needs comfort and I couldn’t be there, it was really hard. But we got through it. You have to”.
Dad, Peter, spent every minute he could by little Alanna’s bedside. Gillian would drive 100kms each way to see her beautiful daughter. “We spent a month driving the hour and a half trip every day to and from the hospital.” The family used all their savings, refinanced their house and borrowed. With money tight, Redkite made it possible to keep the family car on the road by paying the car registration and keep in touch by paying phone bills. As Gillian recalled: “They just said we’ll take care of it. You don’t have to worry”.
