Cancer support from Redkite helped Marina's family

Redkite supporters are sending their holiday wishes directly to families who are battling cancer this Christmas. They are responding to Redkite’s Christmas Appeal which calls for donations to ensure families can continue to receive vital emotional, financial and educational support.

This year, when supporters make a donation, they have been given the opportunity to send a Christmas message to the families supported by Redkite. Redkite supporters' Christmas messages are being posted online as they arrive. Families across Australia are now able to read these messages and find encouragement from them.

Christmas can be a challenging time

Christmas can be a particularly challenging time for families who have children with cancer. Marina, mother of young Matthew (pictured) who was diagnosed with an acute lymphoblastic leukaemia three years ago, found expenses quickly mounted during Matthew's treatment, "and you really just want Christmas to go away".

“All our savings were gone in the first couple of months of Matthew’s illness, it was hard enough to watch our child undergo continual treatments for cancer, without all the worry about paying bills and finding extra money for petrol too,” says Marina.

Redkite supporters ease the pressure on families

For Matthew’s family it’s been a tough journey, emotionally and financially. With donations from caring people in the community, however, Redkite has been able to support Matthew’s family. Redkite provided financial assistance, counselling and cancer support right through their cancer journey. “… it helped take some of the stress and pressure off, it was such a relief,” says Marina.

"Redkite's supporters are an inspiration," says Monique Keighery, Redkite's National Marketing Manager. "It's entirely thanks to their generosity that families can access essential cancer support services, as Redkite receives no government funding. We are pleased to give our valued supporters the opportunity to send their best wishes to families this Christmas."

To provide direct financial assistance over the holiday period, Redkite requires $123,000. In addition, Redkite will continue to support families with telephone and email support services and hospital-based support.
